Premium residential earthworks.

Peak Earth Shaping is known for golf course construction. We bring the same care and skill to residential earthworks across Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Central Otago. From house pads and driveways to screening bunds/berms, our focus is on shaping land that works well for years to come.

1. What Golf Course Earthworks Brings to a House Site

Our background is golf course earthworks, where the finished surface and how it performs over the years matter as much as the level. We bring that to every house pad, driveway and bund we build. The same team and our own machinery from first cut to final finish, with the same attention to detail from a quarter-acre section to a commercial development.

2. Laser Levelling: Getting the Levels Right

On a golf green, a few millimetres of fall can change how a ball rolls. On a house site, accurate levels help water flow away from your home.
Our dual grade laser level tractor gets tees accurate to +/- 5mm. We use the same laser levelling and fine grading on house pads and driveways to achieve the required finish.

3. Reading the Land

Before moving in with the machinery, we walk the property and observe. We check how the water flows, where soil conditions change, whether rock sits close to the surface and how the proposed building platform will sit.

The plan tells us the intention and the land tells us what’s possible.  The shaping begins when we lay eyes on the land for the first time, before anything else happens.

4. Planning for Drainage

On a golf course, drainage is part of the design from day one, we bring the same habit to a house site.
Poor drainage has a tendancy to show up years later,  when you notice the wet mark that’s constantly in the driveway or the soft spots in the lawn.  By considering where water drains naturally at the beginning we can account for it as the ground is shaped.

Earthworks are judged over years, not weeks.

5. Machinery and Judgement

Having our own machinery means we can get on with the job without waiting for hired machinery, most of the time. The dual grade laser level tractor handles the levelling. A Yanmar VIO17 mini excavator suits smaller, high-detail jobs.

Our skilled operators know our machinery inside out and bring the same attention to detail from major earthworks to the final finish.

6. Working with Central Otago’s Conditions

Every property has its own mix of rock, silt and steep slopes. Whether we’re building a golf course or preparing a home, 20 years of experience working across Central Otago and New Zealand, helps us read the land and respond to the unique features of each site.
The land always has the final say.

A Job in Practice

Lawn and planted bund with native plants a year after earthworks at a house in Bob’s Cove, Queenstown, with a timber pergola and bush-covered hills beyond.

Steve’s Yard, Bob’s Cove, Queenstown, a year on. We shaped the lawn and built the bund. It’s now planted with natives and sits in with the land around it.

Why It’s Worth Getting Right

Residential earthworks done to a championship standard:
Protect your home from water for the long term
Save money by avoiding rework, ground settlement or drainage fixes down the line
Hold up in Central Otago’s conditions, including heavy rain and freeze-thaw
Provide lasting privacy with natural-looking screening bunds that blend in as planting matures
A house site deserves the same level of care as a championship fairway.
